So today I’ve booked an appointment for a free estimate of solar energy.. both a solar heater and a solar boiler.
I’ve done this through the PEI Company Renewable Lifestyles and if you recall, I performed an energy audit last fall and since I did that, I now qualify for rebates from the government if I was to install any of the products. How much? Good question.. judging by their website the regular price for a solar water heater taxes in is $6346.73.. their price list is here (.pdf) but I’m assuming the prices on there are before installation and taxes. Anyhow, as you can see on the incentive page, the rebates available are $3580.99 if you’re a homeowner making over $30,000 a year.. and considerably more if you make less then that… in fact.. you can MAKE money by installing one if you make anywhere from $0 – $15,000 a year (don’t ask how you’d make $0 a year.. but whatever)…
So the cost to me would be $2,765.73 taxes in for a solar water heater. Now as I say, this is what it seems to be from their site. They are going to have to come out and do an estimate and I’ll get more details soon to which I’ll post on the site.
If you’re interested in doing something like this, I would highly suggest that you call and book an eco-energy audit. It IS a requirement if you’re looking for the grants and rebates for alternative-energy products such as this. The good news is, that you can get rebates on lots of other things as well, including insulation which is another item I have to cross off my list before I call them back to re-do the audit again (then I get my rebate forms I believe).
I would highly recommend you start here to book your audit. Find out where you stand, and what you can qualify for. The person that did mine was quite helpful and gave me lots of great tips. If you recall, the month after I did the audit, my energy bill was cut in 1/2.. read here.
