I should start off by saying that they have no idea I’m posting this.. but I am going to let them know that I did afterwards.
You know we always complain to someone when we experience bad service, almost all the time.. but how often do we relay it when we receive exceptional or just good service? Not often… it’s also not often you can read about the ‘good’ products out there on the net.. for example.. how many people go on the net to look for reviews on products? Well.. I know I do before any major purchase.. however I know that most people don’t write about how well their product is working.. because they don’t think about it. Why would they? It’s working the way it’s supposed to!
That’s a little off topic honestly, I wanted to write today about the great service I received at Computer Dynamics in Charlottetown yesterday. The story basically goes like this… since I’m a techie and know a lot about computers.. I occasionally get called upon to do some servicing of various computers. No big deal for the most part, if I can’t fix something.. it generally needs to be replaced.. but I at least know how to get to that point of determining where the problem falls.
So I went off to service 2 computers at a local business, and one was a pretty easy fix.. it was running slow.. without too much running in the background.. come to find out, it only had 256MB or RAM, and some of that was shared with the video card.. I simply gave them a 512MB stick and away it went.. fast as ever.
The other computer, was a little more difficult, they told me it was ‘dead’, but was newer and they had just replaced the power supply. No big deal, I disconnected everything and opened the case and look inside.. the heat sink and fan (which cool down the processor .. the most important part of any computer) were detached from the motherboard! Ok, so I simply re-attached it.. and tried to power back on.. everything was stable.. but no video.
I determined the issue to be with the video card, and since they don’t do any gaming or anything really ‘graphics intensive’, I didn’t want to go to Future Shop to buy one of their overpriced ones, and I was doubting Cash Converters would hold anything either. I headed first to ‘Computer Perfect’, which is on the corner next to Holland College.. the funny part is, as I walked in.. the guy behind the counter was cursing and swearing at obviously a computer which was challenging to fix.. heh heh. Anyhow, after a brief conversation with him, he referred me to Computer Dynamics.. up the street past the CIBC Building across from the Pilot House.
So after navigating the hallway to get to Computer Dynamics, I entered a very professional and well laid out Computer Store. Nothing special about it, but it did look like I would find a nice video card here.. how much would it be? Would it work? Who knew.. Anyhow, there were two gentleman working there.. and I spoke to them both about the problem with my video card. They went searching for one in what looked like a used bin, but had no luck.. so went over to a shelf and picked up an ATI Radeon which was $49.. certainly not a bank breaker. But here’s where the story gets good.. I explained that I was ‘pretty sure’ that the problem was the video card, but that I wasn’t 100% as there doesn’t seem to be anything wrong with it. They told me to just take it, and let them know if it worked or not.
Now I believe it’s due to two reasons that they let me do this.. maybe three. One, that I told them the business that I was working on.. so they knew where I was talking about.. two, I was very straightforward and honest about the problem and the fact that I talked tech with them a bit and am a bit older, perhaps I have a trusting face… and three.. well, I don’t think they noticed.. but I left the other video card at the place.
Anyhow, very pleased with the service so far.. I went back to the business and plugged in the card.. same problem.. no video. So now I know that the problem isn’t with the video card.. come to realize that I failed to plug in part of the motherboard.. and as soon as I did.. boom.. started working.. video and all. However, that sort of left me open to the idea that the old video card worked fine too.. so back I went to Computer Dynamics with the entire case to check it when I got there. One of two things were going to happen, I was going to be able to plug in the video card and it would fail.. prompting me to buy the one they gave me, or I would plug in the video card and it work would fine. Meaning that the only problem was that I failed to plug in part of the motherboard. Fortunately for me.. the latter was the case, and the computer was fine.
Even more impressive.. they let me test this at their shop, let me take the spare video card free of charge, and I solved the issue with the computer free of charge.
Now I wouldn’t expect to be charged anything if I didn’t buy anything, however they were EXTREMELY helpful, and they have a LOT of stock on hand for computer parts and other things. I would HIGHLY recommend them to anyone looking to upgrade their computers or looking for peripherals or parts. They were great to me.. and that was the first time I’d been in.
I will be back to Computer Dynamics, thanks Marty and staff.

Hey,
I couldn’t agree with you more. They are the only company that I deal with as that is who dad’s office deals with. That sounds like the neighbors computer that you are talking about…sounds like all the problems described to hubby the other night when they couldn’t get it up and running.
We actually would like to have u look at ours if you get a chance Lennie for payment of course. We don’t expect anyone to look at our computer for nothing. Hey last time it was a case of beer…so just tell us what you want. Drop me a note when you get a chance. It is just running really slow and seemed to have happened when we disconnected our last webcam and installed a new one.
Sure I should be able to do that no problem. I’ll be in touch
