Harvested lots of Veggies so far from my Garden.. well, sort of..

tomatopotI’ve come to the realization that I actually really enjoy container growing on my patio.. but you know what? It’s a hell of a lot of work.. watering now that the plants are maturing is pretty much a daily chore.. and for some ungodly reason a few days ago Mother Nature decided to bless us with some frost when I was in Boston (thankfully Liz was great enough to get all the plants inside for the evening). The best part was, she actually left them inside Saturday night as well (when we received another gift from Mother Nature in the form of about 2 billion cms of rain!).. so all in all, the plants avoided the problem weather last week.

All summer long I’ve reaped the benefits of having to buy little to no lettuce for salads and sandwiches due to the 2 containers of lettuce we grew.. that is probably my favorite veggie to grow to be honest.. cuz when you snip it off to eat it, it regrows! How easy is that?!? Next year I’m going to have a lot more lettuce I think as I can’t believe how much and how easy it was. I did find however that one good salad could take a healthy chunk (at least 1/4) of what we grew.. so I’ll likely have to buy lettuce again soon.

Next up were the yellow beans :-) I’ll be honest, I think food tastes a LOT better when you grow it yourself and the beans were a perfect example of this. They were easy to grow, and PLENTIFUL… in fact we’ve pretty much eaten everything that has grown, and that’s saying a lot… I will be doing those again next year for sure as well.

The tomatoes are starting to come in now. We do have a problem with the ‘plum’ tomatoes we planted in that they are suffering from ‘Bottom End Rot’. This disease apparently is due to a lack of calcium in the plant. There are a lot of reasons as to why this is occurring.. most say irregular watering, but that really hasn’t been the case for me as I’ve watered them fairly regularly.. I believe I do need to add some compost to the soil though (not sure if it’s too late not or not) but I’ll be adding some tonight to all containers (apparently it doesn’t affect the ones in ground that much).

Let’s see.. what else do we got growing on the patio.. carrots.. but I have a funny feeling they are going to be a big dissappointment judging by the few I’ve pulled up the last few weeks. Green Peppers.. which I was pretty much giving up on, but lately they’re shooting up like crazy.. no buds yet.. but the plants are getting huge..

Lots of herbs like dill, mint, lavender, are all ‘growed up’.. and I’ve used some of them.. not realizing at the time when I planted the mint that… well.. I don’t use a lot of it ;-) Hmm.. perhaps it’s time to make some Mint Flavored Frozen Yogurt or something.. Oooo.. better.. Mohitos! :P
