David Copperfield Is Awesome.. Just Ask Liz ;-)
There seems to be quite an aura around town about two things.. a) the H1N1 Virus.. whether or not to get the shot, the risks, school closures, etc..etc.. and on a more entertaining note b) David Copperfield is coming to Charlottetown!
Stay Away From My Girl Copperfield!
When I was a kid, I absolutely loved magic. I still do actually, just not the same way I did when was a kid. My favorite magician at the time, was the household name David Copperfield. I vividly remember watching his specials where he’d make the Orient Express train disappear, the Statue of Liberty disappear, make himself fly, all kinds of awesome card tricks and just general stuff which I couldn’t explain.. which was the best part and the magical part of his performances.
Fast forward to a few years ago, myself and Liz are in Las Vegas attending my cousins planned wedding (didn’t know people ‘planned’ weddings in Vegas..) when we noticed an ad on one of the millions of billboards on the strip advertising the last night to watch a David Copperfield show at the MGM Grand.
We picked up tickets (actually Liz picked up the tickets as I’m pretty sure she was more excited than me.. I was playing poker), and the date was set for the night before we were to come home to PEI (and the cold weather.. blah!).
Showtime arrived and Liz had actually purchased some of the best seats in the house.. we were probably 4 rows back, but there were no seats for 10 or so feet in front of us as it was a walkway… this was pretty convenient as we received excellent service from the waitresses whom used that walkway to go back and forth.. of course, all of them dressed in their skimpy Vegas uniforms.. nice! So, I ordered a bucket of beers for myself and Liz had a really fancy drink of some sort which we kept the glass from.. and the show began.. this.. is.. EXCITING!
I won’t go into all the details of the show, as I’m sure some people that are reading this will be attending and I don’t want to ruin anything about it. However, a few notes.. David didn’t simple walk on stage of course, he had four big guys whom rolled out a big metal frame.. spun it around and all it looked like to me was something that a building would start out as, just iron posts. Anyhow, next thing you know.. a girl comes out and waves a big blanket over the frame.. and BOOM! Loud, loud engine sounds.. and now a shadow under the blanket.. a shadow of a motorcycle.. blanket comes off.. and yep, David Copperfield is sitting on a Harley in the middle of the metal frame.. no idea how this happened.. but what an ENTRANCE!
Like I say, not going to go into too much of the show, but fast forward to about mid-way through the show. The trick David is describing as his next involves ‘impregnating’ a female member of the audience. For some reason I’m thinking that this trick is going to be unreal.. he’s going to make some womans belly grow, or maybe he’s going to show us how to lose belly fat fast! Ok, likely not.. but that’s what I was envisioning.
So good ole David needs a female volunteer from the audience, so he heads out into the crowd. Now, before I go any further, I should also mention that the audience was heavily involved in his show. At times he’d throw out Frisbees and whomever caught them would be invited on stage, at all times the volunteers were completely random. However, this time, he was heading out to hand-pick his volunteer.
David walks up the far side of the theater, and stops about four rows up, on the opposite side of the theater.. right on our row! He starts walking down our aisle and like I mentioned, we had a large walkway in front of us.. anyhow, he starts looking for a volunteer.. he keeps walking.. looking.. walking.. looking.. now approximately 5 people in, I knew what was going to happen. I just smiled and waited and sure enough.. he walked right in front of me, looked at Liz.. and said.. “Would you like to come on stage with me?”.
I could not contain myself, I was so excited for Liz that I just started grinning ear to ear, laughing and smiling as Liz jumped up and started walking up on stage arm-in-arm with Copperfield with a camera-man following. The grin only got wider as JUST before they were going to walk back on stage, I’m not sure WHAT was said to whom.. but Liz reached down and gave David a big ole ass-grab as the camera man caught everything on camera.. *sigh* “that’s my girl… ” ..too funny.
Anyhow, after that debauchery.. he proceeded with his illusion.. which, in all honesty.. was nowhere near the trick I was hoping it was going to be.. it was basically a spin on a fancy card trick.. but nevertheless, Liz was on the stage.. during David’s last performance in Vegas (that year anyhow).. and with exception of my cousin Amanda and Clark getting married, it was the highlight of the entire trip. David gave her an autographed picture, and likely his phone number too but Liz won’t tell me!
So that was our night out with David Copperfield, now unfortunately here in Charlottetown we don’t have the luxury of walking out of the Confederation Center and taking in the rest of the evening at the Craps table or playing some Blackjeck. However, make no mistake, the show is unbelievable and it could turn out to be something that you’ll never forget. It certainly was for us.
