One Of The Best Ideas I’ve Ever Had – Homemade Wine

30 liters baby.. oh yeah!

I’ve been busy posting lots of items today cuz I generally have a lot to talk about.. but as I’m sitting her watching the Lightning destroy the Rangers (yep.. pretty happy about that), I’m sipping on my latest creation.. some homemade Malbec Red Wine.

This is the first time I’ve made wine, so I wanted to tell you all a little bit about the experience. First of all, my folks got me the wine making kit I think last year for Christmas if I’m not mistaken, but for the most part it sat unused until a few months ago when Liz and I decided that before my Mother goes up north to work (she’s a nurse whom goes to remote locations up North), she was going to show us how to make wine. This is something that my Mom has done for quite some time, so it goes without saying that our first time making wine, we were pretty lucky to have someone with a bunch of experience help us.

We recently were given the opportunity to try some Argentina Malbec wine lately, and Liz loved it. I’m not picky about my red wine, I have a pretty broad range of what I like and don’t like, so it didn’t really matter to me, but since Liz liked the Malbec and I’ve heard really good things we decided to buy a kit.

I headed to the Water & Wine shop in town one night after work, and before I go any further I want to add that the people at Water & Wine are absolutely AMAZING. They are super friendly, remember your name, and go the extra mile as you’ll find out to make sure you have a pleasant wine making experience.

So we started making the kit the day before my Mom was heading up North and it was supposed to be a month long kit. About 14 days in, the ’specific gravity’ is supposed to be a certain reading – and ours wasn’t. So we waited another week, then another… with no change to the reading. A bit concerned, we decided to head to Water & Wine to see what they thought, they were so nice, with no charge – they gave Liz some more yeast as they thought the yeast had stopped working.

Truth be told, after another 2 weeks of waiting with no change in the reading, I decided to say ’screw it’ and go with the next step anyhow. I honestly think there’s something wrong with our ’specific gravity’ meter. Ok long story short, after 2 weeks I decided to try a tasting…. YUMMM!!!!

I’m extremely impressed with the result.. in fact I need to get a refill as I’m typing this. It’s really really good and the best part is that we have about 30 liters of it! We did the math, and it came out to about $2.50 a bottle when it comes down to the cost… i’m in heaven, in fact.. I’ll likely need a plano dentist to whiten my teeth after I’m done drinking… hmm.. now that I think about it, I may just have to start another kit soon to make sure I don’t run out! HA HA HA.. I think I have a problem.
