Well, I think I may be one of the target ‘audiences’ when it comes to Apples’ new ‘iPad’. Few reasons I consider myself in this category:
- I don’t own a Mac
- I don’t own an iPod
- I dont own a laptop
- I love gadgets
- I want an iPhone
- I love the iPhone apps
- I’m a geek
So yeah, that pretty much sums it up. Just finished watching the video at Apple.com and I guess what it comes down to for me is, do I think I can do the work I want to do on it… plus more.
I’m really starting to think I can actually.
I was going to write about how I don’t think I’d like the typing on it, and how I wouldn’t be able to do my blog posting on the road, or whatever else.. but then I saw this picture on their page:
I’m sorry but some of those look pretty darn nifty.. and certainly address any issue I would have with typing.
So what else? Well.. obviously I wouldn’t be able to do any heavy duty photo-editing on it.. but truthfully, I hate doing it on a laptop and generally try to do all my editing on my computer at home.
The other problem – storage space. It’s limited to either a 16 gig, 32, or 64 gig ‘hard drive’ versions. They’re actually SSD’s or Solid State Drives but no matter how you put it, the iPad does not include a lot of storage space… hmm.. with everythign web based and almost everything available via the net, that may not be a problem. I’m assuming the movies they’re watching are iTunes movies? No USB connector support for a big portable drive? Hopefully in the future.
More details will follow from Apple I’m sure, and I won’t be buying anything like this for awhile.. but my opinion is that it fits my lifestyle pretty well. Will I get one? Only time will tell.. they go on sale Internationally at a date to be announced later, but the pricing in the US is as follows:
What do you think? Pretty darn pricey if you ask me. The odd part is that Apple seems to think the prices they’ve dropped on us are simply ‘unbelievable’. I couldn’t disagree more. Seriously?? $829 for your top of the line model?? Hell, for about $100 more than your bottom of the barrel version you could get a fully loaded brand new laptop for gods sake. They have one at buy.com, a Lenove Ideapad for $589 this week which I just stumbled upon.
To me the pricing is way out of whack, but as with most things – it will come down over time I’m sure.
I love the product, hate the pricing.. will I buy one? Not yet for sure.. which again, will work out well and in my favor as time goes on.

It was very close to being good enough for a main computer for family members. It will almost do everything they need in a main computer.
As far as the price. It might be a bit high but it's actually cheaper then the original iPhone so considering what it is ($300 more then an iPod touch), the price is actually pretty good. The predictions were closer to $1000.
That said, I'd like to have one for around the house but I'll not be buying one.
I guess it's tough for me to compare it with the iphone's original pricing since the iPhone, at the time.. was a very revolutionary product.. this is just (as much as they will argue otherwise) an over-sized iPhone. So I still think it's overpriced.. I'd say by at least $100 on each level.
It may very well do everything I want it to do.. like I say the dock that I see is very cool and I could see myself using it.. but then, as I write that.. I'm typing away in the kitchen on my girlfriends laptop.. hmm.. would I be doing the same on the iPad? I guess I'll wait to see what everyone else thinks first.
Lets be fair. It's an overside iPod Touch. Not an iPhone.
Not sure how annoying it would be to type for long periods of time on a screen.
Fair enough.. oversized iPod Touch.. with 3g. Anyhow it doesn't matter to me, I have neither so I don't make comparisons. I know the main differences are.. well.. the iPhone is a phone.. has a camera, mic, etc.. iPod touch does not.
