So my HDTV PVR (9200) just died, and I’m in need of a replacement. I think I’ve had it for 4 years and the secondary feed works, but I can’t get any HDTV feed from it
I just finished watching the Pitts vs Tampa hockey game online (for free) and it’s got me to thinking. My Bell Satellite PVR has just decided to go south for the rest of it’s days – and I’m trying to find a decent replacement option. All around the news they are talking about drastically increasing the broadband connection speeds.. I’m wondering if I really need to get another HDTV PVR. Personally I can get pretty much every TV show I want to watch online for free (if I don’t mind waiting a day or two for it become available.. how long is it before this stuff is available online real time?
I guess the reasons that I would need a new PVR that I can think of right now are:
- hockey games – although I just realized that I can watch most of the ones I want online through bell’s online portal or some questionable sites
- tv shows not available online - even though more and more and more are available online – I didn’t buy that big 50″ HDTV to watch a tiny screen
- live events – not just hockey games, but other shows and sporting events which I’d not be able to watch.. Football comes to mind
I also like the idea which I noticed in a commercial during the Olympics of being able to schedule a recording while I’m away from home via cell phone or via the Internet.. very slick.
Sooo.. I’m going to call up Bell and see if they’ll give me a deal on a new HDTV PVR since I’ve been such a loyal customer for how many years now? Anyone want to take bets on if they give me a deal on a new device? Or will I have to cancel?
Hmm?

I got one… Had to pay full price for the HD PVR – $499 + tax – but they gave me 30% off for 1 yr. For us that equates to about $21/mth tax incl. in savings — so approx. $250 over the run of the year. When you call – choose the “disconnect” option in the IVR.
almost everything can be watched online in real time if you're willing to accept the small compressed resolution
Agreed.. however I don’t want to accept the small compressed resolution.. I didn’t buy that damn 50″ to not use it
Wouldn't you qualify for some sort of employee discount?
Nope.. don't work for Bell
Bell DID help me out.. in fact, a better deal than if I was a new customer. $100 credit off the purchase price of the receiver – plus two months free programming. Not bad at all. My programming is roughly $57 a month + tax.. so that equals out to more than the $200 a new customer would receive.. way to go Bell!!
Well isn't this ironic.. I was praising Bell for their great service and how well they treated me.. however today was the day they were supposed to actually bring me the PVR.. umm.. where are you tech guy? I had a morning appointment.. it's now 2pm.. SIGH.. BELL FAIL.
When I got my first bill after I got mine installed… they charged me mileage because the tech came from Summerside. They ended up crediting it but said next time I would be responsible for it. I made that comment that next time I'd request a local tech… but unfortunately you can't do that. There are so many things they can catch you on.
OMG you kidding me? How can they charge you mileage for .. grrrr.. they suck.
I called them again, they transferred me to someone else.. whom then told me I was supposed to call back to confirm or something.. (obviously I wasn't told this nor was I given any number).. anyhow she said that the agent was supposed to give me the #, blah blah blah.. unreal.
So.. Sunday morning it is… better not be a mileage charge on my next bill so help me god.
