Well we are now on day 20 of our $200 food for a month experiment which you can read about here, basically we’ve budgeted ourselves $50 a week to eat for the month to see how we get along.
The amount of money that we’re now down to is around $14! This isn’t good.. or maybe it is. Liz isn’t as positive about this as I am, but the way I look at it – we have 10 days to use the food that we already have purchased – with just over $10 to spare in case of necessities.
The good news is that we still have TONS of food, during our last trip to the grocery store we ended up purchasing about $68 worth of food, and we bought all kinds of things which in my opinion, will get us over the hump, we were down to $20 two days ago but needed to buy a big jug of milk which will likely last us the remainder of the month.
It’s not like we’re starving ourselves either – the last two nights we feasted on steaks, potatoes and carrots for dinner. In fact I realized that when Sobeys’ had on a grilling steak special during our first week – for $6.10 we bought 2 steaks, but they were so big that we split one each of the last two nights.. talk about a cheap steak dinner!
So I guess in summary we’re still doing great and I like the challenge. I fully expect a few days from now that we’re going to have to be creative in order to eat the way we want to – but what I like about the challenge is that it forces you to take a look in the cupboards at things you bought and have just stored, or make up difference recipes and sauces to go with that chicken or beef. An example of this would be the fact that both Liz and I like to have something “snacky” around 10AM each work day. Since I used up the last banana last night making desert (and it was delicious!!), Liz made some muffins from a mix that we had in the cupboard and that’s what I’m ironically chomping down on right now.
It should be mentioned that this is for groceries only, and we don’t count stuff like Dog food, Shampoo, Liz’s Eye Cream or makeup or whatever she buys.. ha. Oh, and finally I wanted to mention that during the month – there were some sweet deals that we stocked up on… two come to mind specifically.. Sobeys had 4/$5 bread – (Bens’ Smart), and Shoppers had (and I think still do) eggs on for $0.99 a dozen… I bought 2 dozen.

I think this is a pretty interesting discussion.
