Boy did I ever feel lazy yesterday.. I pretty much sat on the couch from 1pm to 8pm watching TV. Of course, the Masters is my favorite golf tournament of any of them to watch – and I’ve pretty much watched the Sunday final every year since I believe I moved to PEI 20 years ago (wow it’s been that long??).

A ll eyes were on Tiger this week as he was set to make his return to competitive golf, and he had a great week, finishing 4th – that said, watching him play.. I felt like he never left. Nothing changed really as people were expecting, he blew up a few times (I personally have no problems with this), cursed the odd time during a horrible shot (I do this too.. oh well), and made some unbelievable shots (holing out from 135 or so to climb back in the mix ring a bell?). So over all I’d say it was a very successful return to golf for him, truthfully I’m kind of glad he didn’t win.. why? Simple.. a better man won.
The irony as the title of this post eludes to really hit me like a slap in the face. The main focus all week was on a guy whom cheated on his wife, made horrible decisions with his life, and is looking to regain some sort of normalcy.. but who ended up winning? The guy whom has done absolutely everything for his family, has struggled to KEEP HIS FAMILY life as normal as possible as his wife and mother both struggle with cancer battles. I have to admit that I’m not the biggest Phil Mickelson fan out there, but I like the guy. I think he’s generally a very nice person, a caring person, a family man. His walk off the green towards his wife and the long hug and embrace was a moment on TV which I will not soon forget. I won’t say whether or not I shed a tear at that moment or not, but I will say that I’m a self-admitted emotional guy.. and that was really special.
As I sat and watched, I really could not think of a better storyline to the years first major. A man whom has stood by his wife and family through thick and thin and has been very public about all their struggles, wins over a man whom tore his family apart by his own actions and selfishness.
Good on you Phil Mickelson, congratulations.
