So I’ve decided that I need a new computer, and I don’t know which I want.. a laptop of a desktop model. The differences are obvious, but which would suit me better?
I would LOVE feedback on this issue as I’m sure lots of laptop users have had this debate and I’m sure lots of desktop users thought about it to. Here’s the scoop for my personal situation.
Well, I’m in need of more power due to the processing of photos and video which I’m doing – I realize that this would be a ‘pro’ for the desktop model but I’m wondering if portability would be a factor? Liz has a laptop which I use regularly as it sits in the kitchen for the most part and is a great little computer for pretty much everything.. the only problem I find is that it doesn’t have the power of my desktop – so therefore I never use it for any photo processing.
Laptops generally however are more expensive than desktop computers – even if I was to get one on sale it would be more expensive I’m sure. That said they have the portability and with wireless networks getting so good, that’s a real benefit.
I’m stuck!! Everywhere I look they have sales on for laptops such as buy.com’s Lenovo on for $449 and then Dell has a sale on as well which got me thinking about a desktop (found the 2 day deal here). If you have any insights or recommendations – I’m welcome to it all!

I vote desktop
While a good sized laptop is great for surfing etc. it just doesn’t cut it when it comes to precious screen real estate.
Get yourself an full sized tower (no restrictions for tinkering) and budget a couple of hundreds $ each year for upgrades – 1st year use the upgrade $ for a 2nd monitor.
From then on just keep it evolving – extra RAM, new processor, bigger HD etc.
Thanks for the info there.. truth be told I'm leaning towards desktop.. the i5 or i7 processor would be what I'd like to have I think..
Hmm..
I would def go with the desktop & stay away from Dell
There tech support bites and upgrading is a nightmare
Could save a bit of money by getting a NO OS system and installing Linux on it too
Hey Kenneth – I'd buy from Dell without issue since I would never have to call tech support nor would I worry too much about upgrading besides maybe memory.. all good there. I'd buy to get a good Price, but that said when I was getting ready to buy I'd price out or spec out a Dell then basically just head to tigerdirect or ncix, maybe newegg and just create it and assemble myself – I've done it before.. can save a lot of money and you know exactly what you're getting… so ya.. I agree with not buying from Dell, but not for the same points I guess.
No OS is a great idea too.. I do find that most of the time that unfortunately on specials that offer doesn't exist, kind of sucks.
Thanks for commenting.. I'm leaning desktop now for sure
