So if any of you follow my Facebook or Twitter account, you’d know that I bought an iPad last Friday. I was very skeptical about it, and I still am to a point. However, I wanted to see if it was going to be everything that I wanted it to be. Meaning, one hell of a cool device and a kick-ass eBook reader.
You see, the main reason that I wanted an iPad was to read books and magazines, more specifically.. pdf files and photography books. I have a LOT of them and I know that I can get tons more on the wonderful world wide web. Thing is, I’m not sure about you.. but I absolutely HATE reading magazines and such on a computer screen sitting at a desk.. so I’ve been thinking about getting an iPad since it was announced.
So with the device, I can relax here on my kitchen table (paired to a bluetooth keyboard) and write blog posts (in the Notes app), or browse Facebook, watch TV, listen to music, etc..etc.. It’s basically an iPhone, with a bigger screen – but if you’ve read my thoughts on the iPhone – you’d know that I love that too!
Now… all that said – let’s take a look at the drawbacks.. namely – this sucker is $$$$!! All told it cost me $635 (not on sale) and that’s for the minimum one ($549+ tax at Future Shop). Thing is, that is the only drawback I know of so far. Liz told me that I can justify it as a birthday present to myself, but even that seems pricey to me you all know that I just became debt free and although I’m not going deep into debt for this – I did dip a bit to cover the costs until the end of the month when I get paid though. Like most Apple products however, I can’t see the price of the devices going down too much until they announce the next version – even in the US, buy.com has the Apple iPad with Wi-Fi – 32GB for $869.95, that’s pretty much on par with Canadian pricing.
With the cost out of the way (although that’s a big thought to get rid of!!) the good points which have surprised me so far are plentiful – namely – movie/TV watching. Last night I watched a few episodes of Weeds while I was falling asleep, checked Twitter and Facebook and set my alarm on it. Pretty damn handy, I would almost go as far to say that it’s much more ‘handy’ than a laptop. Which brings me to my next point. Liz has given me the go-ahead to sell the laptop that she uses as long as I can get a keyboard on the laptop.. well, guess what I found laying around the house and paired up to the iPad? Muu ha ha ha.
So right now – it doesn’t look like I’ll be taking it back.. I still have a week and a half to decide.
