This is something that personally I’m very interested in, but to actually have it done would be something of a challenge. I’m not sure about your parents, but I can tell you that mine have a LOT of photos collected over the years. Of course there are many benefits and caveats of having printed photos, but personally I would like to see them all digitized and backed up for use well beyond the lifespan of the paper they are printed on.
Obviously the bad news is that digitizing those old photographs yourself can be a formidable task. Scanning and retouching each photo, slide, or negative would take an untold amount of your time and energy – unfortunately between loading each individual photo and the limited scanner software that most equipment comes with, well.. it’s just not something that interests me. So I went in search of services that would do it for me.
Once reading up on the site – Photoscanning.ca offered a custom box which holds 1200 photos (max 4×6) which would be processed and returned via Canada Post for $85.99 + shipping (which was exactly the cost Canada Post would charge). I find this to be a very good deal to have your photos archived digitally and I would recommend it in a second.. but for one small problem… Canada Post.
I don’t know about you, but I have a tough time convincing myself to put all my parents and my own trusted memories on paper in a box and giving it to the CanadaPost for shipping – I don’t care what kind of guarantee they can give me.. well, actually.. if they gave me a $100,000 guarantee I’d likely HOPE they lost them.. ha ha ha.
But yeah, more to the point – if any of these companies had a local office – I’d do that in a heartbeat, but I want your take.. what do you think about it all?
