You can, and it’s pretty interesting.

Their site is at http://charlottetownpolice.com/, but you can also follow them on Twitter or subscribe to the RSS Feeds if you use them (Google Reader is my best friend!).

Here’s a look at what’s going on today (via Twitter)

Pretty cool hey? I must say that I like this site, it’s informative and somewhat addicting.. I plan on doing another post soon on RSS feeds, so keep tuned if you don’t know what those are or how to use them to your benefit.

After seeing “The Social Network“, I was really curious on the other types of social networks which are out there. I found this awesome infographic on the explosion of social networking sites over the past decade… below are some of these communities with over 1 million users, both active and defunct.

What’s scary is that Facebook is now over 500,000,000 users.. not the 300 million which is indicated on this site. It was cool however going through some of the lesser known ones to see what they are were all about.

Personally I think the boys that created Facebook (going by their movie representations) should have done more acne treatment reviews and had a bit more of a life during college.. but then.. they’re the billionaires now aren’t they? *sigh*

I found this article absolutely fascinating so I wanted to post it myself. Just a number of instances where the Internet has come to the rescue and the various ways it’s helped.

Since the dawn of the first bulletin boards and chat rooms, the Internet has been slammed for a number of perceived social ills. Alarmists have worried about Internet addiction, and critics of networking media point out how a virtual life has replaced face-to-face interaction for some people. Yet the Internet and its growing network of applications have made our lives richer and, countless times, saved lives. Read on for the stories of eight people who are really happy the Internet exists because, without it, they might no longer be with us.
Demi used that power for the good last April when “sandieguy,” a female fan, sent her a tweet saying “gbye … gonna kill myself now.” Moore retweeted the fan’s message to her legions of followers, two of whom uncovered the 48-year-old woman’s identity and sent police to her San Jose, Calif., home in the nick of time.

American filmmaker Dan Woolley says a medical app on his iPhone saved his life after the earthquake in Haiti this past January. Trapped when the Hotel Montana in Port-au-Prince collapsed around him, Woolley said he used the app to correctly diagnose his broken foot. Then, using the light from his iPhone and following the app’s instructions, he ripped off a piece of his shirt to tie off a deep gash in his leg, and used a sock to bandage his bleeding head. Rescue crews pulled him out of an elevator shaft among the rubble 65 hours later.

In 2004, webcam watchers came to the rescue of Bev Holzrichter, an Illinois horse breeder who had set up a cam so people could watch her help a horse give birth. Had she not done that, she might not be alive today. After the foal was delivered, another horse excitedly tried to get a closer look at the newborn and accidentally kicked her three times. Holzrichter’s husband was away and she could have lain in the stable for days before being found. But hundreds of horse fanciers witnessed the event being broadcast on her website and sent help. Local emergency services got calls from as far away as Berlin.

A depressed 16-year-old British teenager told a Maryland girl on Facebook last April that he was about to kill himself. “I’m going away to do something I’ve been thinking about for a while, then everyone will find out,” he wrote. The girl, also 16, told her mom. She didn’t know where he lived, but did know that he attended school in Oxfordshire. Her mother called local police, who alerted British authorities. Using Google and the electoral roll, British police narrowed the search to eight homes. Three hours after the boy sent out his message, police found him unconscious from a prescription drug overdose. The teenager was taken to hospital and made a full recovery.

Looking to photograph a sunset, in January a 40-year-old German tourist walked onto a shelf of packed ice off a St. Peter Ording beach on the North Sea coast of Germany. After the light failed, the man couldn’t find his way back to the beach and feared he would freeze to death. He began flashing an SOS signal using his camera’s flash. The SOS was spotted by a woman watching a webcam of the beach that had been set up by a local tourism association. She phoned police, who drove to the beach and flashed their headlights to guide the man to safety. The man, who declined to give his name, and his webcam watcher were never identified.

When a genetic disorder shut down John Burge’s kidney last year shortly before Christmas, the 50-year-old Cedar Rapids, Iowa, man found himself on the donor list for polycystic kidney disease with time running out. No one in his immediate circle of family, friends or work colleagues was O Positive and willing to donate a kidney. So his son Matthew, 22, turned to Facebook, the popular social networking site. His college friend Nick Etten stepped up to the plate. On Dec. 17, surgeons put the 24-year-old’s right kidney into Matt’s dad, giving the elder Burge a new lease on life.

Women are putting up the color of their bra’s that day!!

The idea is to promote Breast Cancer awareness, and I think it’s a great idea personally… Keep it up!! Hmm, perhaps now that the idea is ‘de-mystified’.. can we get Bra sizes in there as well ?? Ok.. that’s just me being a guy.. sorry.

Facebook shares personal information with developers who create games and quizzes in a way that breaches Canadian privacy law, the Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada has found.

The popular social networking site, which is used by 12 million Canadians, doesn’t have enough safeguards to prevent those third-party developers from getting unauthorized access to users’ personal information, says the report released Thursday by assistant privacy commissioner Elizabeth Denham.

‘For a hangman application … there is no use for the developer to know where the person lives or have their personal email address.’— Jordan Plener, CIPPIC

According to the report, Facebook does not ensure that users have given “meaningful consent” to allow their personal information to be disclosed to the developers.

The report also says that Facebook continues to breach the Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act in three other ways:

* It keeps information from accounts deactivated by users indefinitely and does not make it clear that users can also choose to delete their accounts rather than just deactivate them. Nor does it explain the difference in its privacy policy.
* It keeps the profiles of deceased users for “memorial purposes,” including this in its terms of use. That means users cannot opt out. However, it does not make this clear by including the information in its privacy policy.
* It allows users to post personal information about non-users without their consent. For example, it allows them to tag photos and videos of non-users with their names, and provide Facebook with their email addresses to invite them to join the site. It keeps the addresses indefinitely.

Facebook declined interview requests Thursday, but issued a statement saying it is about to introduce new privacy features that it believes “will keep the site at the forefront of user privacy and address any remaining concerns the commission may have.” It added that in the meantime, it will continue to work with the commissioner’s office and to raise awareness about its privacy controls.

The investigation was launched by the privacy commissioner’s office in response to a complaint from the Canadian Internet Policy and Public Interest Clinic, which is based at the University of Ottawa.

Jordan Plener, a law student who initiated the complaint on behalf of CIPPIC, said he had a number of concerns about areas such as Facebook’s default privacy settings and the personal information available to developers.

“For a hangman application, for example, there is no use for the developer to know where the person lives or have their personal email address.”

The complaint cited allegations on 12 topics. Denham deemed allegations about four topics unfounded. Facebook accepted Denham’s recommendations and resolved problems in four other areas.

Plener said that was a good start. But he noted that so far, Facebook has refused to accept Denham’s other recommendations.

“They haven’t agreed to change the amount of information a developer will access in the user’s account when they sign up for an application … or let them know what information is going to be used,” he said.

With respect to the four remaining topics, the assistant privacy commissioner has asked Facebook to reconsider its recommendations to resolve the problems and said she will follow up in 30 days. If Facebook does not comply at that point, the privacy commissioner’s office can have its recommendations enforced by the Federal Court.

There’s been a few friends status updates I’ve seen lately that are ‘cleaning up’ their Facebook to only include people that they talk to regularly, care about, stalk.. you know.. that sort of thing. I think the reason for this is the amount of updates some people put in, and the application updates that are useless and most don’t care about, and the odd person that likes to post about every single thing they are doing at every single moment.. seriously.. what the hell?

Anyhow.. just want to show you how to easily get the updates from the friends that you want, it’s really easy with a friends list.

If you take a look at the top right hand side, you’ll notice that most people have ‘News Feed’ as their top choice.. Did you know you can re-order this?

For example: this is what most people have (except for the 2 humane society lists I have of course):

But you can simply drag and drop whichever list you want to the top, and when you login, that’s all you’ll see… so for example, I have a list of all my family members.. and if I wanted to just see their updates when I log in, I dragged that list to the top and now when I login from any computer, it’s the Family list updates which I see first.

So take a few minutes and make a list of all the ‘interesting’ friends you have or maybe just make a list of all your friends and remove some of them from that list, and drag it to the top.. they have no idea you don’t want their updates.. you don’t remove them from your Facebook.. and everyone is happy.. I mean.. who knows when you’re going to need to talk to the comic book collecting physcopath you never talked to in high school?

Add this to the post I created to hide the application updates.. and your Facebook experience just got a lot better

Are you as sick as I am of seeing the Facebook applications show up in the feed.. stuff like “Which Safari Animal Are You?” and “What type of car are you?”.. well.. I sure as hell am.

Two steps and you can get rid of those annoying buggers if you’re using FireFox!

1. Install Greasemonkey

2. Install the following Greasemonkey Script.

Done.. now you’ll see in the top right corner of your Facebook page:

And that’s that.. a much better Facebook experience for me anyhow..

Thanks to the script writers here.
