Tax Refund – What to do with it?

If you’re one of the lucky people whom end up getting a tax refund year after year, I’ve a question for you.. what do you do with it?
I filed my taxes last week via Netfile, and generally the turnaround for the cheque to come in the mail is around 2 weeks (if I remember well). Originally, and up until today.. I was thinking that the best way thing to do would be to put it on my line of credit, now.. I’m not so sure.
It’s a sizable amount which would …

I Made It To Payday! Budget Update for January 2010!

Over two weeks ago, I posted that I was ‘broke’ for two weeks as my paycheck was already spent. Well, I’ve reached payday after those two weeks.. and well, I’m no further ahead. I was hoping that my laptops screen was lying to me, but alas.. it was not this morning when I checked it over my coffee.
Mind you, I’m not in the depressed state of mind I was that fateful Tuesday since I have a little bit more spending cash then I did during the last pay period – …

I Haven’t Even Gotten Paid Yet, And I’m Broke For The Next Two Weeks..

Here at work, we get our pay stubs a few days before we actually get paid. It’s kind of nice actually to know what to expect on Friday – even if it is only Tuesday. Today however, I think I’d rather not know.
I just took a peek at my paystub and started deducting the bills that I have to pay for the month.. wow. Talk about a kick in the junk. Good thing we have a lot of leftover food in the fridge cuz I’ll see you next paycheque! All …

Read Any Good Books Lately? You Know, All These Finance Books Say The Same Thing..

I’m becoming a library junkie, but I’m sort of proud of myself for doing so. Hell, up until a few years ago I barely read anything if it wasn’t on a glossy page with Maxim on the cover. Lately I’ve been picking up a TON of finance books and I have to be honest in saying the best one so far has still been “The Wealthy Barber” in terms of opening my eyes to how to save money and grow wealthy over time. What is interesting however, is how some …

Dragon’s Den – The Rich Get Richer..

Can someone PLEASE tell me why budding entrepreneurs head to the show Dragon’s Den? I’m trying to figure out what the benefit for the business owner is… I’ve been able to come up with just a few:

having experienced rich people who’ve “been there done that” on your board of directors
financial backing

That’s all I can come up with, and personally I don’t think #2 should really even qualify. Meanwhile, the ‘Dragons’ (which is a horrible name btw), get the following benefits:

to give themselves a ‘celebrity’ appearance
only invest in the best ideas, …

Thinking Of Canada Savings Bonds To Invest In? Question: Are You High???…

0.4% Interest… that’s what you’ll get.. 0.4!!
How brutal is that eh? Department of Finance Canada has the report and I can’t help but think back to when the bonds were paying off a health 7% interest rate and my little $100 bonds that my parents made me buy were doubling every 7 years… good lord, at 0.4% interest.. I dont’ even want to guess at how long it would take, it’s not even worth the effort!
Well, if it makes you feel any better, I decided to do up a chart …

Kids Want A New Car? Now This Is A Good Idea..

Robert Kiyosaki’s book Rich Dad, Poor Dad.. has a lot of good information. Without ’spoiling’ it for everyone, the book centers upon the idea of obtaining ‘Assets’ over ones lifetime instead of ‘Liabilities’.
It makes sense really.. assets make you money, where liabilities make you spend your money.. and usually that money is after-tax money. Things like income real-estate, stocks, certificates, etc. are what he promotes people to buy, and to not be sucked into the money trap or ‘rat race’ which most people get into. You know what I’m talking …

Gas Went Down! So What?!?! Read On..

Ever since I  actually calculated how little the $0.02 movement in price per liter amounted to at the pumps every couple of weeks.. I really can’t believe how I used to rush to the pumps or used to, the night before gas was going to move in price. Let’s just take a look shall we?
Ok.. so, the other day IRAC announced that they were cutting the price of gas by 1.5 cents per liter. Most of us drive 45 – 50 liter tanks with our cars, so that’s a grand …
